2019 Annual Antique Auto Show and Picnic
The 2019 Antique Auto show had a special visitor which Ben Joyce had been trying to get for a few years. This was a 1934 Pierce Arrow. Only 1,740 Pierce Arrows were produced that year when the Great Depression was taking its toll on car manufacturers. As usual the top Jazz Songs from the '20s accompanied the visitors, but this year we included a song from 1919 sung by Nora Bayes, "How do you keep them down on the down on the farm after they've seen Paree". That song might have been remembered by a lifelong resident of Cataumet and Schoolhouse attendee, Elmer Landers who served in WWI.
Our popular picnic lunch was coordinated by Jean Davock with help from Kris Fisher, Missy Fox, Nancy Pollis, Lindsey Salamone, and Pauline White. Fresh lobster rolls from Cataumet Fish, chicken salad rolls and chips from the Daily Brew, homemade cookies donated by Schoolhouse board members, and drinks were complemented with slices of John York’s delicious watermelon.
On this beautiful fall day, there was also a steady stream of visitors inside the Schoolhouse. Some were there for the first time, others just returning to enjoy the sense of history imparted by the old classroom. Three children were particularly intrigued, coming in and out repeatedly, pretending it was their school!
A 50-50 raffle drew a small crowd of its own. One lucky patron went home with an extra $100 or so in his pocket after buying the winning ticket and, of course, splitting the proceeds.
